Markie Post, the actress known for turns in Night Court, The Fall Guy, Hearts Afire and more, died on Saturday, following a three year, ten month battle with cancer. She was 70.

Oh no!!! That's terrible. Night Court!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 8, 2021 7:24 AM |
Marjorie Armstrong Post (November 4, 1950 – August 7, 2021); 70, Palo Alto, was an American actress, known for her roles as bail bondswoman Terri Michaels in The Fall Guy on ABC from 1982 to 1985, as public defender Christine Sullivan on the NBC sitcom Night Court from 1985 to 1992, and as Georgie Anne Lahti Hartman on the CBS sitcom Hearts Afire from 1992 to 1995.

Very sad. She was so great on television.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 8, 2021 7:27 AM |
Another actress no one will remember. It's sad but true. Hollywood has changed. Take note, current crop of "working actors". No one cares when you depart the business!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 8, 2021 7:28 AM |
Are they killing off at the cast of night court? Is this some weird new serial killer who targets sitcoms?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 8, 2021 7:28 AM |
This is very sad. She seemed like a nice person. I’ve always enjoyed her work.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 8, 2021 7:29 AM |
In case you missed it, Charlie Robinson who played Mac died last month.
And Harry Anderson died 4/16/2018
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 11 | August 8, 2021 7:29 AM |
And yet Susan Dey, from a much earlier sitcom, continues to live on and remains silent.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 8, 2021 7:30 AM |
That was a surprise. Didn't even know she was ill. She was everywhere in the 80s and 90s it seemed. From recent pictures online, it looked like she aged very well.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 8, 2021 7:30 AM |
She did seem nice. (I'm regretting that Ellen Foley comment I posted above.)
Odd just last night I was thinking of her. I was remembering some dopey guy trying to impress me that he was dating the Rum Tum Tugger from the LA cast of Cats. I was like are you sure its that character? He sort of got nervous and then I added because he's straight and married to Markie Post. He was clearly lying and changed the subject.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 8, 2021 7:32 AM |
Harry Anderson died young too.

R16, He sure did. The flu at 65 is no joke.
Richard Moll is currently the oldest surviving cast member at 78 followed by John, Ellen and then Marsha.
I had no idea that Paula Kelly died last year in February.

OMG! Both Post and Robinson died of cancer. What did Anderson die of? (I heard it was deadly, whatever it was.) There could be a cancer connection to Night Court, or not.
RIP to both; I always liked them on Night Court. Sad.

OMG that is sad! She kept that a big secret!
And how bizarre her costar died just a few weeks ago!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 8, 2021 7:43 AM |
R23, Harry Anderson had the flu, which caused him to have a stroke. The flu causing the stroke and heart disease killed him.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 8, 2021 7:46 AM |
In late January 2018, Anderson had a bout of influenza, and subsequently suffered several strokes. On April 16, 2018, he died in his sleep of a stroke due to influenza and heart disease at his home in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 65.[26][5][9][10]

"Oh yea," - I just said to myself... Markie Post was on Chicago P.D. early in the series. She played Linsday's mother.
Post was one of those actresses who was very attractive and in her 60s, I could not believe was a hard-lived-life bartender (probably a former prostitute) from Chicago. Nothing against her performance, which was fine, it was just that they could not dress her down enough to look like someone who had lived a knocks hard life.

MAD Magazine’s parody of the show was as awful as the show itself. They spoofed this so-called joke by having one of them say “you are so Meg Ryan and every Rob Reiner movie.“ Somebody else says, “what the hell is that supposed to mean?“ The response, “who knows. It’s hip, it’s trendy, and it saves our writers from having to think of an actual joke.“ Time for the gay community to turn its back on that show for good.
Or to quote a character from an actually funny show, Rerun from [italic]What’s Happening!![/italic], when referring to a fictional show that tried to steal one of Raj’s ideas: “That show has writers? I thought they made it up as they went along!”

Marsha's FB post
Early yesterday morning, I got the news that Markie Post has passed away. Out of respect for her family, I didn't want to say anything publicly until I saw it in the press. But, I was shocked and devastated. Though our recent communications were limited to social media exchanges, I had no idea she was ill. But, I'm not surprised she didn't let on what she was going through, she wouldn't have wanted us to worry. She has been, and will be, described as perky, bubbly, sweet, etc. And she was. But, she was also real, caring and kind. I never heard a cross word from, to, or about her. Because of our shared love of game shows, we were on set playmates. She'd call out a word and I'd try to guess the Password. Soon, Harry and John would join in and we'd have a rousing game going. You hear actors saying their casts were a family, but on Night Court, the whole crew was family. I was adopted late, but I never doubted that I was family too. Markie was a big reason for that. She was our welcome lady, or whatever you call that person who shows up at your door with a pie and a smile the first day you move in the neighborhood. I never got the pie, but the smile was bright enough to make you forget pie was a thing. Harry, Charlie and Markie were a big part of my life. They were cast mates, co-workers, friends and family. I will miss them, and cherish the memories we made and shared. Three of the nicest people I've had the pleasure to know, may they rest together in peace, forever calling out Passwords, cracking jokes and sharing laughs and smiles. My deepest heartfelt condolences to all whose lives they touched, and may their families and friends be comforted with the knowledge that there are millions of us. Goodnight, Markie. The Password is...sad.

Aw, I remember her from Night Court. That show was one of my guilty pleasures. For some reason her character wore lots of blouses with really high necklines, most often completely covered her neck up to her chin. Back then I wondered if she was hiding some defect on her neck. Apparently not, based on other pictures I see of her. I guess it was some kind of 80's fashion.

Consolation prizes included a Mr. Coffee, a case of Shasta (and a Shasta beach towel), L'eggs pantyhose, and Milkbone dog biscuits. I don't recall there being Rice-a-roni (the San Francisco treat). I didn't go to the Pyramid with Moll, I went with Lois Nettleton. I looked and I still have my studio pass.

Didn't look, r147, we were both in suits. He really liked mine and touched my lapel. I told him I got it in the garment district. I guess I was tense when I went to the Pyramid because Dick Clark told me to relax and rubbed my shoulders. Oh and during a break I asked Moll why Paula Kelly had left. It kind of flustered him and he said he didn't know.

Markie Post, Joey Heatherton, Stevie Nicks, Billie Eilish, Billie Lourd...any other female stars with male names?

Richard Moll was sexy on Night Court.
I was stunned when I saw him in "But I'm a Cheerleader". Then I thought he was possibly gay.

Who cares R147? He's a fan of the religious right & The 700 Club.

Some of the ABC Friday night shows not made by the Miller Boyett bilge machine were not terrible. Dinosaurs, for example, but they kept moving its timeslot around until they finally canceled it and made every character extinct.

I was a fan of Dinosaurs, r152. My favorite is when Monica is introduced. She sticks her head in their window, looks around and says "Oh I just *love* dirt walls, but they're so hard to keep clean.".

Hearts Afire wasn't so bad. John Ritter and Conchata Ferrell were funny, and it was the first time I remember seeing Leslie Jordan, who stole all his scenes. He played an effeminate man who lived with his mother but was supposedly straight. It was the 90s, after all. Markie was pretty much wasted playing a wife and mother.

A lot of people did not have remote controls at the time at the time this originally aired, R157.
I actually liked Night Court when it originally aired, but the lack of the remote explains a lot of the more inexplicable shows that stayed on the air for years. The viewing audience had to actually get up and physically change the channel. It wasn't engagement, it was more ugh, whatever, and people kept watching.

Linda Bloodworth Thomason had only one decent show in her. The rest were just recycled slop.

Markie and her mullet - giving great clues.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | August 9, 2021 3:54 AM |
Holy cow, someone actually has put all the old TV schedules on Wikipedia.
Night Court finished in 1992 so by then people would have had remotes. I vaguely recall my parents having for an eggshell colored box. The problem is there wasn't a whole lot to watch on TV back in those days. I think people forget how quickly that has changed.
Take Night Court for instance: it was the only half-hour sitcom that aired during that time either at 9 or 9:30 for years. Then a shift happened and in the 1989-1990 season, Doogie Howser managed to tie with Night Court in terms of ratings. Both shows were in the top 30 for the season.
Then the following in the 1990-1991 season Doogie Howser beat it and remained in the top 30 for the year. Night Court fell out completely and stayed there for the rest of the run.
In 1991-92 it was up against Doogie Howser MD, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles or Room for Two on ABC, Jake and the Fat Man, Raven or 2000 Malibu Road on CBS. It aired before Seinfeld. ABC also eventually added Home Improvement which killed it.
In 1990-91 (Wednesday) it was up against Dougie Howser MD and Jake and the Fatman on Wednesday. (Friday in the fall) it was up against DEA, Over My Dead Body, and Perfect Strangers.
In 1989-90 it was up against Dougie Howser MD and Jake and the Fatman
In 1988-89 it was up against Jake and the Fatman or The Equalizer on CBS or Coach or The Wonder Years on ABC
In 1987-88 it was up against Hooperman on ABC or Magnum PI, Jake and the Fatman or The Equalizer on CBS
In 1986-87 it was up against Magnum or Dynasty
In 1985-86 it was up against Crazy Like a Fox, Bridges to Cross or Simon & Simon on CBS and The Colbys, the ABC Thursday Night Movie or Lady Blue on ABC
In 1984-1985 Simon & Simon on CBS or The ABC Thursday Night Movie, Street Hawk, Eye to Eye or Glitter on ABC

r169 it's so true about not having much to watch back then. Many shows from that era were hits because there was really nothing else on at the same time. Today, many of the shows from back then would not be hits in today's world with so many choices and much more adult-oriented material.
I know DLers love their old shows from decades ago but I can't watch 90% of them today because they just seem so antiquated now.

Hearts Afire...quite a cast:
John Ritter
Markie Post
Billy Bob Thornton
Beth Broderick
Wendie Jo Sperber
Clark Duke
Leslie Jordan
Conchata Ferrell
Ed Asner

by Anonymous | reply 178 | August 9, 2021 8:34 AM |
R177, it was quite a cast, and if you'd believe it, Billy Bob Thornton "got the reviews," as they used to say.
He was so well-regarded that he nonsensically survived the show's move from DC to Bumfucke, while Wendie Jo Sperber, George Gaynes and Ed Asner were dumped.

Markie was so fantastic as the beleaguered but tough and loving mother in the failed ABC sitcom ODD MAN OUT (2000), with Erik Von Detten, Jessica Capshaw & Trevor Fehrman.
RIP & thanks to my fave TV Mom!

I thought Markie tore up the scenery in Lifetime's "Chasing the Dragon". She played a single mother who gets addicted to HEROIN!
Seriously, RIP.

I did a Google search and I see NOTHING about this.🙄. I think you have him confused with someone else. Plus, he played a gay character in “But I’m a Cheerleader.” I don’t think he would play a role like that if he was “a fan of the religious right and The 700 Club.”

[quote]He played an effeminate man who lived with his mother but was supposedly straight. It was the 90s, after all.
Crazy how even the most obviously gay characters had to be presented as straight back in the day. Even the most flaming queens were written as pussyhounds. It was ridiculous. Those were the times, though.
